With the new Behind-the-Scenes Vatican Museum Tour, we will enter the Vatican Museums where we will then be escorted by a Vatican guard to visit areas otherwise off-limits to the public.
Your special access will allow you to view such marvels as Bramante's famous Spiral Staircase (designed by the same High Renaissance master responsible for the original project of the new Basilica of St. Peter’s), the fascinating Etruscan collection of gold jewelry with splendid items coming from the excavations of tombs in the numerous Etruscan cemeteries to the north of Rome, the Room of the Masks with the refined mosaics from Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli as well as beautiful statues of Venus and the Three Graces, the Hall of the Busts with the lovely statue of the sleeping Ariadne and the noble statue of Zeus with his thunderbolt, and finally the Pope’s wonderful private Niccolina Chapel with the superb Renaissance fresco masterpieces by Beato Angelico (brought to Rome from Florence to take on this special commission for the Pope) depicting the martyrdoms of Saints Stephen and Lawrence. You will also admire Vatican favorites such as Greek Hellenistic-style masterpieces like the Belvedere Torso and the Lacoon statue, and a vist to the Raphael Rooms to view Raphael’s School of Athens, showing the stunning heights reached in High Renaissance fresco painting. This unique experience will conclude with a visit to the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s world-famous paintings as well as a tour around St. Peter’s Basilicawith its overwhelming architecture and decorative works—a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience!
