As of the 1 June 2022 Ordinance of the Minister of Health, COVID-19 restrictions on entering Italy have been entirely lifted. Italy does not require any proof of vaccination, a negative test result, or a COVID-19 recovery certificate to enter the country, regardless of your vaccination status.

All passengers arriving in Italy are no longer required to fill out an EU Digital Passenger Locator Form as of 1 May 2022.

Accessing venues in Italy

With the state of emergency lifted on 31st March 2022, Italy entered its first stage of reopening. These relaxations on restrictions have since been updated and increased as of 1st May 2022. From May onwards, no Green Pass of any form have been required for the majority of services and locations throughout the country – this includes restaurants, bars, public transport, hotels, and public offices (shops and museums), as well as the newly added cinemas, sporting events, and nightclubs.

In fact, the only areas of Italy that now need a Green Pass, either basic or super, are specific buildings such as hospitals and care homes. Health care workers will also require a Green Pass to access their places of work until further notice. You can see the full list of Green Pass requirements here.

Relaxations on the requirement to wear FFP2 masks were also announced, in the same timeframe. Having been extended on 15 June 2022, masks are now only required on numerous forms of local and interregional transport, this will last until at least 30 September 2022. This extension means indoor events (such as cinema and theatre) and indoor sporting events no longer require the use of an FFP2 mask, although it is still “recommended”.

Visitors from the US, UK, Canada, Japan, and Israel can show the documents issued by their respective authorities in lieu of the Italian Green Pass. The document must both state the identity of the holder and the date and type of vaccine administered. An ID document will also be required to verify the holder’s identity.

Certificates will be accepted in one of the following four languages: English, Italian, French, or Spanish. Any certificate not in one of these must be accompanied by a certified translation.

The certification of successful completion of the vaccination cycle must relate to one of the four vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency: Comirnaty from Pfizer–BioNTech, Moderna, Vaxzevria, Jansen (Johnson & Johnson).

Daily antiviral disinfection is no longer compulsory for all hotels, cars, trains, buses, and rented vehicles. As is the case with mask-wearing is obligatory indoors and in crowds for all personnel and clients. However, clients are encouraged to make use of antiviral hand gel, to wear masks even outdoors when necessary, and to follow social distancing measures during activities and transportation.

Contactless ticket redemption is available. Temperature checks are now not carried out at the entrance to all attractions and museums. All private drivers are encouraged to carry Covid-free test certification.

Validity of the Covid Pass

To understand the Italy’s Covid Pass measures, first we need to define the two types of Green Pass so as to avoid any potential confusion. 

  • A basic Green Pass: issued to persons who test negative to an antigen or molecular swab test within past 48 hours, or have completed a full course of vaccination;
  • A super Green Pass: issued to fully vaccinated persons with a full course of an approved vaccine and who have recovered from Covid-19, as well as those with the booster.

The validity of the COVID-19 super Green Pass to access activities and services in Italy is 6 months. However, if the individual has either received the booster or has completed a vaccination cycle and has recovered from COVID-19 the validity is unlimited.

Those who come from a foreign country and are in possession of a certificate of recovery from Covid-19 (where six months have elapsed) or vaccination with a vaccine authorised or recognised as equivalent in Italy, issued by the competent foreign health authorities (where six months have elapsed since the completion of the vaccination cycle), are allowed access to services and activities for which the super Green Pass is provided after having carried out a rapid antigen test swab (valid for 48 hours) or molecular test swab (valid for 72 hours).

The test is not mandatory in case of recovery from Covid-19 after the completion of the primary vaccination cycle. In the case of vaccinations with vaccines that are not authorised or not recognised as equivalent in Italy, access to services and activities is allowed in any case after having carried out a rapid antigen test swab (valid for 48 hours) or molecular test swab (valid for 72 hours) with a negative result for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

When you return home

It is imperative that you ensure you are aware of all of your own country’s COVID-19 entry requirements, keeping updated with your government website is the best way to do this.

For all of those looking to return to the US, passengers will no longer be required to show a negative COVID-19 test or a documentation of recovery from COVID-19 prior to boarding a flight into the US. This is a result of an announcement made on 12 June, 2022.

  • All our staff, guides, and drivers have been double or triple vaccinated.
  • We have reduced the number of participants for each activity and tour we organize.
  • We encourage mask-wearing indoors for those who wish.
  • We support the use of hand hygiene for employees, customers, and visitors, and provide tissues, soap, and water near the entrance and hand washing for our locations.
  • We perform routine environmental disinfection of frequently touched surfaces in the workplace, such as workstations, telephones, keyboards, and doorknobs.
  • We are encouraging a balance of remote and office working, and insist that any employees showing symptoms stay at home and do not return to work until the CDC criteria to leave home isolation have been met.
  • We have ensured that sick leave policies are flexible and consistent with public health guidance and that employees are aware of and understand these policies.
