You will have the opportunity to learn about the history and secrets of these mythical places and to admire the greatest pictorial and architectural works of the great Renaissance masters. Walks Inside Rome will have the pleasure of taking you on an exciting Tour Vatican.
More than 2,000 years of history and culture
Vatican City is the smallest independent city-state in the world both by area and by population, it is about as large as an average city park. It lies on Vatican Hill in northwestern Rome, just west of the Tiber River. It has been an independent sovereign state since the signing of the Lateran Treaty of 1929 and, although distinct from it, it is under “full ownership, exclusive dominion, sovereign authority and jurisdiction” of the Holy See. Nowadays, Vatican City serves as the spiritual and governmental center of the Rome Catholic Church, the Christian largest church in the world – St. Peter’s Basilica – and its ruler is the Pope, who is also the bishop of Rome.
As known, the Vatican is the most popular tourist destination in Rome if not even in Italy, and is almost always very popular. It consists of an elaborate complex of extraordinary artworks, magnificent papal palaces, and lush landscaped gardens overlooked by Michelangelo’s mighty dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica. With a lot of goodwill and patience, you can visit it entirely in just one day. However, since there is a very long queue at the entrance to the museum, to avoid wasting time in long waits we recommend buying skip-the-line tickets and getting priority entrance.
A visit to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica

Let yourself be accompanied by an expert local guide who will organize the most suitable tour for you.
In the Vatican there is a lot to see, just one day is not enough, but you certainly can’t miss these stops:
- The largest and most famous Catholic church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica, is the beating heart of the Vatican, a true concentration of beauty and majesty. The inside of the church itself is already breathtaking. It can accommodate up to 60,000 visitors at the same time and is still used by the Pope who celebrates mass there. You can walk freely around the Basilica and admire the columns and sculptures. Marvel at the miraculous relics housed inside it. Take the time to discover the details of the sculptures, the Bernini’s Baldachin, a huge bronze sculpture located on the main altar of the Basilica, and also the numerous statues of Christ and the apostles.
- The Sistine Chapel is a must-see in the Vatican, it almost needs no introduction. Its magical atmosphere and the ethereal beauty of its frescoes are worth living at least once in their lifetime. Here you can admire the incredible mix of paintings by the most glorious artists of the Renaissance, such as Botticelli, Perugino, Raphael, and Ghirlandaio that adorn the walls. But, above all, you can admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces, the famous ceiling depicting Old Testament scenes such as The Creation of Adam and on the back wall the Last Judgment. Nowadays, the Sistine Chapel still serves as the Pope’s chapel. Since it is part of the Vatican Museums, to visit it you must go through these museums.
- The Vatican Museums are the museum center of Vatican City. Considered among the most beautiful museums in the world, they consist of 14 small museums which house one of the largest and most astonishing collections of art and archaeology created by the Popes over the centuries. Here important works of art from the Egyptian period to the end of the Renaissance are kept. All eras are represented and there are works and masterpieces from many countries. They also include some of the most exclusive and artistically significant places of the Apostolic Palaces.
